Tari Piring in New Haven

In the midst of a performance of ballet, jazz, and modern, brightly lit candles danced on plates across the floor…

Last weekend, Yale undergraduate student members of “A Different Drum” (ADD) performed their annual fall showcase. ADD presented three shows in the auditorium of the ECA (Educational Center for the Arts) located in New Haven’s Audubon Arts District. The colorful event included a range of disciplines and techniques in dance, including ballet, jazz, and modern. In addition, one piece featured cultural dance, and in particular, the celebrated Tari Piring “Plate Dance” of the Minangkabau Culture of West Sumatra, Indonesia, often performed during cultural ceremonies and festivals…
