ISF educational outreach in Toledo, OH

Photo May 22, 9 11 36 AMThe International Silat Federation was invited to conduct a presentation for a kindergarten class at Gan Yeladim in Toledo, Ohio. The students were given an interactive presentation introducing them to the country of Indonesia, its location, and other significant country facts. Students were amazed at the size and beauty of the images they saw. Later in the presentation, the cultural importance of the history of Silat Tuo Minankabau was introduced to the class. All of the students were very excited and eager to learn about this new mystical place. In America, students of this age have heard of countries such as China and India, but many other countries remain unknown. Following the PowerPoint presentation students participated in a traditional Silat Tuo class. Their instructions were to “see and do.” Students would need to use their own awareness as they moved along with the instructor. The entire class including the teachers were enthralled by the beauty and underlying principles of the art. The entire class participated in several more exercises before returning to their desks. The instructor handed out some coloring sheets along with a fun quiz for the students to complete to help them retain what they learned. The teachers were extremely thankful and impressed by the presentation.
